รัฐประหารครั้งนั้นสั่งการโดยรัฐบาลทหารกรีกและจัดฉากโดยกองกำลังพิทักษ์ชาติไซปรัส[31][32] ร่วมกับเอโอกา-บี รัฐบาลทหารได้ขับประธานาธิบดีอัครมุขนายกมาการีโอสที่ 3 แห่งไซปรัส ออกจากอำนาจ แล้วแต่งตั้งนีโกส ซัมป์ซอน ให้ดำรงตำแหน่งแทน[33][34] จุดประสงค์ของรัฐประหารคือการรวม (enosis) ไซปรัสเข้ากับประเทศกรีซ[35][36][37] และการประกาศตั้งสาธารณรัฐเฮลเลนิกแห่งไซปรัส (Hellenic Republic of Cyprus)[38][39]
