但以理·贝斯

但以理·H·贝斯（Daniel H. Bays；1942年—2019年5月9日），一中文名裴士丹，是美国历史学家，专门研究中国基督教。

生平

贝斯出生于密歇根州圣约瑟市。他于1964年在斯坦福大学完成历史学位，再在1967年及1971年于密歇根大学分别完成远东研究硕士学位和现代中国基督教历史博士学位。^[1]他的博士论文是政治学家张之洞于晚清时期寻索现代化的过程。^[2]

他完成博士学位后便开始在堪萨斯大学展开他的教学生涯。他在那里教了三十年历史及领导该校的东亚研究中心。及后，他转至加尔文学院的历史学系，持有斯布尔霍夫教席（Spoelhof chair）十二年，直至2012年退休。^[3][4]自退休后他仍在该校当荣誉教授，但他和太太珍妮丝已搬回密苏里州 堪萨斯城。^[1]

在1984年，当贝斯在台湾当傅尔布莱特学者时，他收到中国历史学家费正清的来函，鼓励贝斯作有系统的中国基督教研究，而当时贝斯也真的在进行此项研究。这也令他展开中国基督教历史研究，后来于1996年出版了《基督教在中国：十八世纪至今》 （Christianity in China: From the Eighteenth Century to the Present）。^[5]

贝斯于2019年5月离世，死于帕金森氏症。^[3]
