夏思义

夏思义博士（英语：Patrick Hugh Hase；1947年—），前香港公务员、历史学家，政务官出身，官至社会福利署助理处长。他曾于1980年代任沙田理民官，在1996年退休后成为以研究香港围村、历史和文化为主的历史学家^[2]。

生平

夏思义出生于英国，并在英国剑桥大学取得博士学位，在那研究英国盎格鲁萨克逊时代的历史^[3]。1972年，夏思义到达香港并于政府架构下工作。在初到香港的六个月里，夏思义被港英政府安排先学习粤语以助在本地工作，因而令他后来能以流利广东话沟通^[2]，开始对香港历史产生兴趣，特别是以香港居民为重点的历史^[3]。1980年代起夏思义任职政务官，包括政务专员^{[注 1]}及1980至1982年间出任沙田理民官^[4]。夏思义于1996年提前退休，官至社会福利署助理处长。^[5]离开政府后他创立了文化历史顾问公司，并曾为政府考察建筑物的历史^[6]。他最迟在1999年于香港大学任职历史系研究助理^[7]，其后亦在岭南大学兼职历史系讲师。

夏思义在1973至1974年左右开始研究香港历史，例如香港村落及其村民的历史和本地民间习俗等^[2]，同时撰写了多份著作，例如：1984年与前政务官许舒及渔农处前助理处长饶玖才共同发表，研究新界种茶业历史的《在新界的传统茶叶种植》（Traditional Tea Growing in the New Territories）^[8][9]；2008年出版，记述英国接管新界时爆发“新界六日战”的《被遗忘的六日战争：1899年新界乡民与英军之战》^[10]；2017年出版，对清初编成的《新安县志》作出当时新安县^{[注 2]}县官情况作研究的《被遗忘的英雄：明末至清初的新安县及其县官》（Forgotten Heroes: San On County and its Magistrates in the Late Ming and Early Qing）^[11]；以及2020年出版，收录新界村民口述历史的《新界里的村落、生活和政治：认识传统中的新界》（Settlement, Life and Politics in the New Territories: Understanding the Traditional New Territories）^[2]等。

人物

夏思义在任理民官时曾思考新界村落的建筑安排，最后为此研究风水，并向风水师请教。他认为这有助其了解中国社会面貌。他亦喜欢中国文化，会在家中增设与该文化有关的饰品^[6]。在1996年或1997年，他以爱好为由，从政府宿舍搬到塘上村，并跟村民一同参与天后拜祭仪式。不过由于他信奉天主教，所以拜祭时只会在旁观赏^[3][12]。

他跟妻子Aileen^[13]在英国认识，在结婚后来港。他们二人有4个子女，全都在港完成小学教育。其妻子则曾任中学教师，并在2004年左右退休^[3]。
