隐翅虫总科

隐翅虫总科（学名：Staphylinoidea）是多食亚目甲虫之下的一个总科，属于隐翅虫下目的一员。本总科广布世界，多样性高，已命名物种有五万八千种以上^[1]。

特征

大多数物种为中小型甲虫，有一对缩短的鞘翅（elytra）。The hind wings have no accessory posterior ridge (locking device), no wedge cell and apical cell. Abdominal 8th segment not entirely invaginated in the 7th. Head mostly without coronal suture.^[2]

根据Beutel & Leschen (2005) 透过比对隐翅虫下目各物种的成虫及若虫的121项外形特征，综合出本总科之下应包括下列七个科^[3][4]：

尽管本总科物种的明确化石记录可以追溯到三叠纪^[1]，但可能起源于中生代早期^[5]。
