旋涡星云是螺旋星系的旧名称，直到20世纪初期，天文学家还认为这些是星云，像是涡状星系，是我们银河系内数种星云中的一种。当天文学家了解这种“旋涡星云”其实是远在银河系外的星系以后，这个名词就不再使用了。
