生平
1963年12月，參加中國人民解放軍。1964年10月，加入中國共產黨。1974年2月至1977年3月任武漢軍區政治部秘書處秘書。
1977年3月至1982年8月任陸軍團副政治委員。1982年8月至1983年2月任陸軍團政治委員。1983年2月至1984年4月，任陸軍163師政治部主任。1984年4月至1985年8月，任163師政治委員。1985年8月至1989年10月，任中國人民解放軍第42集團軍政治部主任。1989年10月至1990年6月，任解放軍軍事經濟學院政治部主任。1990年6月至1991年12月，任解放軍軍事經濟學院政治委員。1991年12月至1994年12月，任解放軍總後勤部政治部主任。1994年12月至1999年5月，任中央軍委紀委副書記，解放軍總後勤部副政治委員兼紀委書記。1999年5月，起任成都軍區政治委員、軍區黨委書記。1990年7月，晉升為少將軍銜，1996年7月，晉升為中將軍銜。
2003年至2007年，任廣州軍區政委，2004年6月晉升為上將[1]。2008年3月十一屆全國人大華僑委員會副主任委員[2]。
此外他擔任中共第十六屆中央委員，中共十四大、十五大，相繼當選為中央紀律檢查委員會委員。
