歷史沿革

1881年，羅馬尼亞大公卡羅爾一世建立了羅馬尼亞王國，當時使用的國旗就是和現在樣式相同的藍黃紅三色旗。

1945年，第二次世界大戰之後，蘇聯陸續扶持建立社會主義政權，羅馬尼亞也包括其中，格奧爾基·喬治烏-德治成立羅馬尼亞人民共和國。這期間在三色旗上添加了國徽。該時期總共出現了四種樣式的羅馬尼亞國旗。1952年以後的國徽上添加了五星，國旗也相應改變。1965年，格奧爾基·喬治烏-德治逝世後，齊奧塞斯庫上台，把國號改為「羅馬尼亞社會主義共和國」，並修改了國徽圖案，國旗再次變動，這是羅馬尼亞共產政權最後一版國旗。

1989年12月21日，羅馬尼亞發生大規模反共示威，事件最後演變為流血事件，導致齊奧塞斯庫政權的倒台，齊奧塞斯庫夫婦雙雙處死。示威者仿照匈牙利十月事件，將國旗上的舊國徽剪掉，剩下的部分作為反抗旗幟。

1989年12月27日，羅馬尼亞在齊奧塞斯庫政權倒台之後，確認去掉舊國徽的藍、黃、紅垂直三色旗為現在的羅馬尼亞國旗。

乍得國旗是經常會與羅馬尼亞國旗混淆的旗幟，區別是羅馬尼亞國旗所用的藍色為靛藍，乍得國旗則是偏深的海軍藍，兩方國旗的相似度也成為國際話題之一。

2004年，乍得政府要求聯合國追溯羅馬尼亞國旗源歷，時任羅馬尼亞總統揚·伊利埃斯庫表示不會對羅馬尼亞國旗做出改變。

因與羅馬尼亞有深厚的歷史淵源，摩爾多瓦國旗也與羅馬尼亞國旗圖案比較相近。此外，與羅馬尼亞國旗圖案相類似的還有安道爾國旗。
