邏輯，在它純粹的形式上，是接受一組假定並達成一個結論的推理。更加明確的說，邏輯是對說明性的推理系統的研究，它是為引導人類(同樣也可能是其他有智能的生命/機器/系統)「應當」如何進行推理而提出的系統。邏輯指出那些推論形式是有效的那些不是。在傳統上，邏輯是作為哲學的分支來研究，但它也可以被當作數學和計算機科學的分支。人類「實際上」如何推理通常在其他學科下研究，這包括認知心理學。
