2003年2月1日星期六,美國穿梭機 哥倫比亞號 在美國德克薩斯州和路易斯安那州上空重返大氣層時解體,機上7名太空人全部遇難。這是繼1986年挑戰者號穿梭機災難之後,第二次以災難告終的穿梭機任務。
中國首次載人太空飛行任務
神舟五號是中國載人航天工程的首次載人太空飛行任務,於2003年10月15日發射。神舟飛船由長征二號F運載火箭發射。自1999年以來,神舟飛船曾進行過四次無人飛行任務。中國成為繼蘇聯(後來的俄羅斯)和美國之後,世界上第三個擁有獨立載人太空飛行能力的國家。截至2025年,這次任務標誌着人類最後一次單獨乘坐飛船升空執行完全獨立的軌道任務。
