紅玉髓

紅玉髓，是一種棕紅色的二氧化矽為主要組成成份的礦物，常被用作為一種裝飾性寶石，也可以被彫刻成各種工藝品。

紅玉髓屬於玉髓的一種變體，因摻雜氧化鐵而顯色，紅玉髓的顏色多樣，色澤最亮的顯橙白色，而最暗的接近黑色。紅玉髓最常見的產地為巴西、印度、德國和俄羅斯西伯利亞。

語源

這款埃及項鍊由雙錐形紅玉髓珠，金箔卷條和十顆護身符組成。現藏於沃爾特斯藝術博物館（英語：Walters Art Museum）。

在中文中「紅玉髓」也可以叫作紅石髓和赤珠。

在英文裏，中文的紅玉髓有兩種含義，一種是指顏色較淺的光玉髓(英語：carnelian/cornelian)^[2]，另一種是指色暗且質地較硬的褐紅玉髓（英語：sard）。^[3][4]

英語中的"carnelian"源自14世紀的單詞"cornelian"，於16世紀誤寫為carnelian.^[5] Cornelian與羅曼語族的其他一些單詞同源，來自中世紀拉丁語的corneolus，可進一步上溯至拉丁語的cornum（大果山茱萸）^[6] 。大果山茱萸的透亮紅色果實與光玉髓相似。 牛津英語詞典認為"carnelian" 是 "cornelian"的變種，來自拉丁語的caro, carnis(肉)。老普林尼認為sard一詞來自呂底亞的薩第斯(Sardis)，褐紅玉髓的產地；而其他人認為這一詞最終可追溯到波斯語的سرد (sered)，意為紅黃色。

歷史

早在新石器時代早期的保加利亞，紅色的玉髓就被用做寶珠。最早有打磨晶面的紅玉髓出自保加利亞的瓦爾納古墓（英語：Varna Necropolis），可上溯至公元前5千年中期。寶珠兩側各有16個打磨麵，合計32個打磨麵。^[7]公元前5000-4000年的梅赫爾格爾遺蹟中出土了有鑽孔的紅玉髓。^[8]克里特島上克諾索斯的米諾斯青銅文明層中發現了公元前1800年的紅玉髓，其形制表明曾用作裝飾。^[9]在羅馬時代，紅玉髓被廣泛用於製作寶石像（英語：Engraved gem）；又因為紅玉髓不沾蠟油，還被用來製作蠟封用的印章。^[10]褐紅玉髓被用作亞述的滾筒印章、古埃及和腓尼基的聖甲蟲、以及古希臘和伊特拉斯坎的珠寶。^[11], 猶太大祭司的胸牌（英語：Priestly breastplate）上的第一塊寶石(被稱作odem或sardius)是一塊紅色寶石，很有可能是褐紅玉髓，也有可能是紅色的碧玉。^[11]在啟示錄4:3中, 使徒約翰描述天上的寶座上坐着的"好像碧玉和紅寶石"，其中"紅寶石"即為 sardius. 同一種「紅寶石」還出現在啟示錄21:20中，是聖城城牆根基上的十二種寶石之一。^[12]

塞浦路斯恩克米（英語：Enkomi）出土的項鍊，由金箔和紅玉髓珠製成，藝術風格受到邁錫尼文明的影響。項鍊的年代為公元前1400-1200年，現藏於大英博物館。

光玉髓和褐紅玉髓的區別

紅玉髓有時指光玉髓、有時指褐紅玉髓；在英文中carnelian和sard也時常混用。通常而言，光玉髓和褐紅玉髓有如下區別:

	光玉髓(Carnelian)	褐紅玉髓(Sard)
顏色	較淺，色澤呈淺橙色到紅棕色	較深，色澤呈深紅棕色至近黑色。
硬度	較軟	較堅硬
斷口	不均勻，碎裂，呈貝殼狀	與光玉髓相近，但更暗且呈鋸齒狀

上述性質是連續變化的，因此光玉髓與褐紅玉髓之間沒有明確的界限。
