源自拉丁語 illūstris (明亮的,閃亮的;顯赫的,突出的) +‎ -ous (從名詞構成形容詞的後綴,表示擁有或顯示出某種特質,程度任意)illūstris派生自illūstrō (照亮;使...出名,使...名聲顯赫),源自in- (表示裡面的前綴) + lustrō (通過獻祭來淨化;照亮)lustrō ((淨化為目的的)獻祭),可能最終源自原始印歐語 *lewk- (亮;照)*lewh₃- ())。
