源自中古英語 suffren,源自盎格魯-諾曼語 suffrir,源自拉丁語 sufferō (「獻上,支撐,承受,遭受」),源自sub- (「下」) + ferō (「撐着」),源自原始印歐語 *bʰer- (「負,持」)。取代了原生詞古英語 þrōwian。
