同知为中国宋明清的文官官职名，雅称司马、分府、二马[1]:288，如宋代枢密院副使称为“同知”，作为“知枢密院事”的佐贰官；又如州府之佐官为“同知”。[2][3]
在清朝之位阶约为正五品，而职能通常为佐理知府之盐政，缉捕盗匪，海防等行政事宜。通常此官职会因地制宜而设立，也会视专业加以增置。若外出驻派者，其派驻办事处称为“厅”。
再以清代台湾为例，17世纪－19世纪设立之淡水海防同知，即是派驻于竹堑（今新竹），为掌管海防而设立的官职，且该淡水海防同知所派驻办事处之地区，称淡水厅。
