《蓝色星球》为有史以来第一个关于世界海洋自然历史的综合系列，每一集都考察海洋生物不同方面的生态[1]。
《蓝色星球》获得了艾美奖和英国学术电视奖[2]。执行制片人是Alastair Fothergill，音乐由George Fenton创作。戴维·阿滕伯勒之后于“生命”系列节目“哺乳动物的生命”（2002）和同一个制作团队创作的《行星地球》（2006）中演出。
