变异中心（center of diversity）指的是一个种或属的生物基因高度变异的地区，变异中心同时也很可能是起源中心。[1][2] 这个术语是由前苏联科学家尼古拉·伊万诺维奇·瓦维洛夫和美国科学家杰克·哈伦创造出来的，[3] 瓦维洛夫在1926年发表的研究《种植植物起源研究》中列出了十个变异中心：
- 1 - 中国：生菜、大黄、大豆和芜菁
- 2 - 印度：黄瓜、大米、芒果和亚洲棉花
- 2a - 印度尼西亚：香蕉、椰子和大米
- 3 - 中亚（北印度、阿富汗和土库曼斯坦）：扁桃树、苹果、亚麻和兵豆
- 4 - 近东：苜蓿、卷心菜和黑麦
- 5 - 地中海沿海：荠菜、鹰嘴豆和杜兰小麦
- 6 - 埃塞俄比亚：咖啡、高粱和珍珠粟
- 7 - 墨西哥南部和中美洲：玉米、利马豆、木瓜和陆地棉
- 8 - 南美洲西北部（玻利维亚、厄瓜多尔和秘鲁）：马铃薯、西红柿和埃及棉
- 8a - 智利的诸岛：马铃薯[3]
后来瓦维洛夫又加入了次级变异中心。[2]
