尤金·畢德生

尤金·H·畢德生（英語：Eugene H. Peterson，1932年11月6日—2018年10月22日）是美國更正教神學家和牧者。^[1]他的著作多達三十本，當中包括金牌書籍獎（Gold Medallion Book Award）得獎名作《信息本聖經》（The Message）。^[2][3][4]此翻譯以意譯為主，著重把聖經用當代美式英文生動地表達當中意思。^[5]

生平

畢德生於1932年11月6日出生於華盛頓州斯坦伍德，後在蒙大拿州卡利斯佩爾成長。他於西雅圖太平洋大學完成哲學文學學士學位、在紐約神學院完成神聖神學學士學位、又在約翰斯·霍普金斯大學完成閃米語碩士學位。^[6]

他擁有多個榮譽博士學位。^[7]他於1962年在馬里蘭州 貝萊爾創立了基督我王長老教會。^[8]他在此教會當年29年主任牧師，直至退休。他後於1992至1998年期間在維真神學院當雅各·M·候士頓靈性神學教授（James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology）。^[9][10]

爭議

畢德生曾發表有關同性戀的言論備受爭議。他於2017年7月12日在《宗教新聞服務社 （頁面存檔備份，存於網際網路檔案館）》（Religion News Service）支持同性婚姻，此與他的宗派美國長老教會立場一致。後來，他澄清相關立場：

「最近有記者詢問我對同性戀和同性婚姻的看法有否改變，我假設此問題是基於我以前是美國長老教會的牧者，而此宗派最近支持同性戀及允許神職人員主持同性婚禮。我已退休了將近25年，我承認我跟記者說『我沒有許多相關經驗。』再澄清一下，我支持聖經的婚姻觀：一男一女的結合。我支持一切聖經的價值。」^[11]

死亡

畢德生於2018年10月8日因身體狀況突然惡化而被送往醫院。他的兒子艾瑞克·畢德生在電郵中提及是因發炎引起。由2017年開始，畢德生出版了他的最後一本書《翠鳥著火》已甚少出席公共場合。此時段剛巧與同性戀爭議的同期發生。在畢德生快要過身的日子，他的家人提到：「那時（即他最後的日子），他顯然在思考地上與天堂之間那狹窄又神聖的空間。我們聽到他在跟別人說話、似是有人在迎接他到樂園。還有一、兩次他重拾他靈恩派的習慣、說起方言來。」可見畢德生死前的日子充滿「喜樂與微笑」。

畢德生經過一星期的住院，在2018年10月22日死於心臟衰竭，享年85歲。^[12]

《信息本聖經》

《信息本聖經》可算是畢德生最有名的著作。此翻譯的原意是要為現代的讀者提供更淺白易明的版本、更明白原文的含意。

「當大數的保羅寫信給別人，大多數人能即時明白他的意思。又如先知以賽亞講道時，我不相信人們會到圖書館查考他的意思。此正是我翻譯的原則---我由新約聖經的希臘文開始。此語言深奧，文法又參差不齊又難懂。我嘗試寫了頁、想像加拉太人聽起來的樣子。」^[6]
