生平
1893年10月14日生於俄亥俄州斯普林菲爾德，父親早年逝世，母亲在剧团清洁工維生。童星出身，4歲隨姐姐參加巡迴劇團演出，1912年以《An Unseen Enemy（英语：An Unseen Enemy）》走上影壇，而後好友玛丽·璧克馥介紹她在D·W·格里菲斯的影片中扮演角色，格里菲斯認為吉許像狄更斯小說中的人物一樣，是最理想的演员。在《被摧残的花朵》中，她已年屆25歲，卻依然能演出15歲的小女孩，令人稱奇。吉许扮演的角色大多是悲剧人物，她經常在惡劣的環境中拍戲，如冬天的雪地裡。[1]
1926年吉许與米高美公司签約，拍摄六部电影，第一部是《波西米亚女郎》，這一年她的演技己達到顶峰。1928年離開米高美公司，成為百老汇演员。1984年獲得AFI終身成就獎。1987年以93歲高齡演出《落葉梧桐（英语：The Whales of August）》。1993年2月27日，心力衰竭的吉许在睡夢中自然逝世，终身未婚未育。
