Commonwealth

Commonwealth傳統意義上指為促進共同利益而成立的政治群體，但該詞並無與中文一對一的對應翻譯，但可理解為廣義的“聯邦”。歷史上與共和主義（Republicanism）同義，可被用來指單一的共和國，因此在這種意義下譯為国家。现今可指稱一群主權國家的聯合體，例如“Commonwealth of Nations”翻译为英联邦，“Commonwealth of Independent States”翻译为獨立國家聯合體。美國有四個州的正式名稱為“Commonwealth”：肯塔基州、麻薩諸塞州、宾夕法尼亚州、弗吉尼亚州，此时可翻译为“州”或“邦”。

字源

Commonwealth這個名詞在15世紀時在英國出現，意指公眾福祉、共同的益處或福利。它是一個複合字，最早被寫為“common-wealth”或“common weal”（這個寫法，後來演變為“public weal”）。這個名詞最早是被用來翻譯拉丁語：res publica，即“公众事物”。

它的字根“wealth”，較古老的寫法為“weal”，是“well-being”（安樂、福利）的意思。17世紀時轉變為財富、收入之意。因此17世紀時，“commonwealth”出現了「公眾共有的財富」的意思，被認為是經由人民、共和國的共同財富，使國家擁有的力量。
