繼承自中古英語 algorisme, augrym,派生自盎格魯-諾曼語 algorisme, augrim,派生自中世紀拉丁語 algorismus,派生自阿拉伯語 الخُوَارِزْمِيّ (al-ḵuwārizmiyy),源自波斯數學家 Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī,該詞的意思是「來自花剌子模的人」。因為受到了無關的 古希臘語 ἀριθμός (arithmós)(同英語 arithmo-)影響,發音產生了變化(-s- > -th-)[1]。
