借自德語 Angst或丹麥語 angst;最早見於19世紀Siegmund Freud、Søren Kierkegaard著作的翻譯。最開始首字母大寫(同德語、同期的丹麥語),1940-1944年開始首字母小寫。[1][2][3]源自中古高地德語 angest ← 古高地德語 angust ← 原始日耳曼語 *angustiz;與荷蘭語 angst同源。對比瑞典語 ångest。
