借自德語 Angst或丹麥語 angst；最早見於19世紀Siegmund Freud、Søren Kierkegaard著作的翻譯。最開始首字母大寫（同德語、同期的丹麥語），1940-1944年開始首字母小寫。^[1][2][3]源自中古高地德語 angest ← 古高地德語 angust ← 原始日耳曼語 *angustiz；與荷蘭語 angst同源。對比瑞典語 ångest。
