繼承自中古英語 levene。中古英語和早期現代英語的拼寫包括 leven, levin, levyn, leiven 和 leyven。[1]更早期的詞源較不清楚。被認為與哥特語 𐌻𐌰𐌿𐌷𐌼𐌿𐌽𐌹 (lauhmuni)相關(參見該詞條以了解更多)[2],最終源自原始印歐語 *lewk- (“明亮的;發光”)。可能是規則反映,可能是北日耳曼語支借詞,或可能來自已失傳的底層語言。
