源自原始意大利語 *rouβos。中間位 -f- 代表本詞借自奧斯坎-翁布里亞語支，如奧斯坎語 𐌓𐌖𐌚𐌓𐌉𐌉𐌔 (rufriis)、翁布里亞語 𐌓𐌖𐌚𐌓𐌖 (rufru)，或源自其姊妹變體，如法利斯克語，最终源自原始印歐語 *h₁rewdʰ- (“紅色的”)。本詞可能在當時已經滲透到城市用語當中，用來表示羅馬市場上出售的牛的毛色；而同源的 rōbus 則最後只限於表示牛的毛色。
