• de Vaan 認為源自*solh₂- (“整個的，健康的”)，類似sollus、salvus。

• 也有人認為與原始日耳曼語 *sēliz（哥特語 𐍃𐌴𐌻𐍃 (sēls，“好的，快樂的”)、古英語 sēlra (“更好的”)）有關，源自原始印歐語 *sōlh₂-（參見sōlor (“安慰”)）。
