'n Seun is 'n manlike kind (spruit), ongeag ouderdom, en die woord beskryf die verhouding tot die ouers in 'n familie. Die vroulike ekwivalent is 'n dogter.
Voor industrialisasie, en in sommige landbou-gebaseerde ekonomieë, is daar 'n hoër waarde aan seuns as aan dogters geheg, omdat seuns fisies sterker was en beter met die landbou kon help.[1] In heelwat gemeenskappe sal seuns tradisioneel eerste erf, voor dogters.
Onder Christene verwys “die Seun” (met 'n hoofletter) of “Seun van God” na Jesus Christus. Christene wat in 'n drie-eenheid glo, aanvaar Jesus as die menslike vergestalting van God. In die Bybel verwys Jesus na Homself as die “Seun van die Mens”.
Sommige vanne verwys na die vader, met 'n voor- of agtervoegsel wat dit aandui.
