It was created for the 1985 local elections, replacing Cookstown Area C which had existed since 1973. It was called Cookstown Central until 2014, and originally contained five wards (Gortalowry, Killymoon, Newbuildings, Oldtown and Tullagh). For the 2014 local elections it gained most of the abolished Ballinderry DEA and Drum Manor DEA.
