La valeur standard d'un kilobit est 103 bit = 1 000 bit. Les kilobits sont généralement utilisés pour exprimer la vitesse de communication numérique (56 kbit/s RTC ou 512 kbit/s haut débit pour une connexion Internet par exemple).
Le kilobit (kb) ne doit pas être confondu avec le kilobyte (kB) dont la valeur courante est 8 kbit.
