Un llagu hipersalino ye una masa d'agua ensin salida al mar que contién concentraciones significativamente elevaes de cloruru sódicu o otros sales minerales. Estos tipos de llagos tienen l'agua salino con concentraciones que superen el conteníu medio de sal del mar (35 gramos/llitru). Nos llagos hipersalinos esisten especies afeches especialmente de microbios y crustáceos,[1] sicasí nun suelen ser agües fayadices pa la mayoría de les formes de vida. Delles especies entren en dormancia cuando se desecan, y sábese de delles especies que tán presentes dende hai 250 millones d'años.[2][3]
Los llagos más salinos del mundu atópase en L'Antártida (Valles secos de McMurdo), como'l llagu Don Juan percima del 40% de concentración salina[4] (18 vegaes más salín que los grandes océanos, que de normal tienen un salín del 3,5%). Esta elevada concentración provoca que'l llagu Don Juan nun sía un glaciar, a pesar de que soporta temperatures per debaxo de los -50ºC.
Fora de L'Antártida el llagu más salíno ye'l llagu Assal en Xibuti,[5][6] con un salín del 34,8%, anque l'exemplu más conocíu de llagu hipersalino ye'l mar Muertu, con un salín del 33,7%.[7]
Ente los llagos hipersalinos de Norteamérica destaca'l Llagu Monu de California onde s'atopó la estraordinaria bacteria GFAJ-1.
