Arthur Lubin

Arthur Lubin (25 de xunetu de 1898, Los Angeles – 12 de mayu de 1995, Glendale) foi un direutor, productor y actor cinematográficu d'Estaos Xuníos, conocíu por realizar diversos filmes de Abbott and Costello y por crear la serie televisiva Mister Ed. Destacáu direutor d'Universal Pictures nos años 1950, foi'l cineasta que dio'l so primer contratu cinematográficu a Clint Eastwood.

Biografía

Lubin en 1928

El so verdaderu nome yera Arthur William Lubovsky, y nació en Los Angeles, California. Criáu en Jerome (Arizona), estudió na Page Military Academy y nel Carnegie Institute of Technology. Siendo neñu foi aguador de compañíes teatrales itinerantes, y trabayó como voluntariu en circos, y en rematando los sos estudios, en 1922 decidió faese actor.^[3]

Lubin empecipió la so carrera artística como actor teatral y cinematográficu, anque tamién dirixó shows pal Hollywood Writers Club.^[4][5] Como actor especializar nel gran melodrama, n'agudu contraste cola so posterior faceta de direutor cinematográficu.^[6] Foi nesa dómina, en concretu en 1925, cuando foi acusáu xunto a unos amigos del cargu de obscenidad pola policía de Los Angeles por llevar a escena una producción de la obra d'Eugene O'Neill Desire Under the Elms.^[7]

Lubin dirixó'l primer gran ésitu d'Abbott and Costello, Buck Privates (1941). El filme tuvo un bien bon resultancia de taquilla, y Lubin dirixó a la pareya nos sos siguientes cuatro películes, In the Navy (1941), Hold That Ghost (1941), Keep 'Em Flying (1942) y Ride 'Em Cowboy (1942),^[9] toles cualos llograron tamién bones recaldaciones. Por ello, la revista Variety nomó a Lubin el direutor de Hollywood de mayor ésitu commercial de 1941,^[10] anque Lubin solicitó trabayar n'otru tipu de películes.

De toles películes de Lubin, la de mayor recaldación foi Phantom of the Opera (1943), teniendo tamién una bon resultancia Rhubarb (1951).

Lubin tamién foi direutor de la serie cinematográfica de "La Mula Francis", pola que llogró un porcentaxe de los beneficios.^[11] Más palantre llevó la idea a la televisión, produciendo la serie Mr. Ed, na cual consiguió qu'actuara nun episodiu la so bona amiga Mae West.^[12] Como direutor televisivu, Lubin trabayó en shows como Tarascu (1958), Maverick (1959), Bonanza (1960), Mister Ed (1961) y The Addams Family (1965). Lubin rodó'l so peracabo trabayu en 1978, Little Lulu, un especial televisivu para ABC Weekend Special.

Na so faceta de productor, Lubin foi'l primer cineaste en dar un contratu a Clint Eastwood.

La carrera de Lubin remató a finales de los años 1970, viviendo'l restu de la so vida col so compañeru sentimental, Frank Burford, y finando na residencia Autumn Hills de Glendale (California) el 12 de mayu de 1995, a los 96 años d'edá.^[7] Los sos restos fueron incineraos, y les cenices espardíes nel mar.
