Ljubuški je grad i naseljeno mjesto u Zapadnohercegovačkom kantonu, primorskoj Hercegovini, u južnom dijelu Bosne i Hercegovine.

Klima je umjerena sredozemna (25,2 °C sr. godišnja) sa 2.300 sunčanih sati u godini. Uz poznati krški hercegovački reljef Ljubuški ima više plodnih nizija: Ljubuško polje, Veljačko polje, Vitinsko polje, Rastok i Beriš, koje natapa troimena rijeka Tihaljina – Mlade – Trebižat, na kojoj se nalaze i dva biserna slapa – Kravica i Koćuša posebne prirodne ljepote u cijeloj Bosni i Hercegovini. Grad Ljubuški se nalazi na raskrsnici važnih saobraćajnica prema Mostaru (36 km), Makarskoj (55 km), Splitu (120 km), Trebinju (120) km, Dubrovniku (130 km) i Sarajevu (170 km).
Pretpostavlja se da je ljubuški kraj, s obiljem vode, bogatstvom flore i faune bio nastanjem u prethistorijsko doba, o čemu svjedoče kameni, koštani i metalni nalazi, koji se čuvaju u muzeju Franjevačkoga samostana Humac, najstarijoj muzejskoj zbirci u Bosni i Hercegovini, osnovanom 1884. Prvi poznati stanovnici bili su Iliri, najvjerovatnije u početku Daorsi, koje su potisnuli ratoborni Ardijejci i Delmati. Od njih su ostale brojne grobne kamene gomile i utvrđene gradine po padinama i vrhuncima brda.
Rimljani su u III vijeku p. n. e.. zaratili s Ilirima i pokorili ih početkom I vijeka. Ljubuški je u upravnom smislu potpao pod Naronitanski konvent (okrug), čiji je glavni grad bila Narona, danas Vid pored Metkovića. Iz šest vijekova rimske vladavine ostalo je dosta spomenika. Historičari poimence znaju za dva naselja. Prvo je bila putna stanica Bigeste, koja je ležala na vojnoj cesti Salona (Solin) – Narona (Vid), oko čije lokacije postoji dvojba među arheolozima. Jedni je smještaju u Humac, s drugi u Radišiće, nedaleko od Ljubuškoga. Drugo naselje Pagus Scunasticus, u predjelu Mostarskih Vrata, podigli su vojni veterani, koji su u znak zahvalnosti radi dodjele zemlje podigli spomenik rimskome caru Tiberiju. Na Humcu, u blizini Franjevačkoga samostana, na lokalitetu Gračine, otkopani su ostaci rimskoga vojnoga kompleksa, koji se obično naziva Bigeste. U jednome dijelu objekta nalazilo se kupalište sa saunom, koje se zagrijavalo podzemnim sistemom za grijanje (hypocausis). U objektu su pronađeni brojni ostaci keramike, vrčeva, svjetiljaka, vaza, novčića, nakita, prstenja, fibula, stakla, alata i oružja. Čini se da je riječ o pratećem objektu uz vojni logor (canabae). Sudeći prema brojnim nadgrobnim natpisima može se pretpostvaiti da su u Ljubuškom boravili dijelovi rimskih legija: Legio VII Claudia Pia Fidelis, Legio IIII Flavia Felix, Legio VIII Augusta, te pomoćne vojne jedinice, kohorte: Cohors I. Belgarum, Cohors I. Lucensium, Cohors III. Alpinorum i druge. Premda nisu posebno istražene, u Ljubuškom su zasigurno egzistirala i brojna poljoprivredna imanja, tzv. villae rusticae. Zna se da su postojale i ranokršćanske crkve, bazilike, od kojih prednjače one u Vojnićima, Vitini, Proboju i C. Grmu.
Nakon dolaska Slavena od 7. vijeka. ljubuški kraj počinje nazadovati. Spomenici iz razdoblja ranoga srednjega vijeka postaju rijetki. Ljubuški je vjerovatno ulazio u sastav oblast Rastoke, koju u 10. vijeku spominje bizantski historičar i car Konstantin Porfirogenet. Iz tog doba zanimljivi su nalazi karolinškoga oružja, mačeva i ostruga, te Ljubuške ploče, kamena spomenika s cvjetnim pleternim ukrasom, tipičnim za ranoromaničko razdoblje na našem jadransko-mediteranskom području 7. – 11. vijeka. Ipak, najčuveniji je spomenik ljubuškoga kraja Humačka ploča, natpis na Bosancici-bosanskoj ćirilici s primjesama dvaju glagoljskih slova, koji govori o gradnji crkve Sv. Mihovila, što je podiže izvjesni Krešimir i njegova žena.
Po brojnosti značajni su srednjovjekovni spomenici stećci, kojih je na 45 lokaliteta evidentirano oko 600 primjeraka (Studenci, Klobuk, Zvirići, Bijača, Hardomilje, Grab, Veljaci i dr.). U XIV – XV vijeku podignuta je na vrhu Buturovice tvrđava, koja se obično pripisuje hercegu Stjepanu, premda je starija od njega. Osim hercega Stjepana Vukčića Kosače i njegovih sinova ističu se u XV vijeku velikaši Radivojevići-Jurjevići-Vlatkovići. Krajem XIV vijeka spominje se i selo Veljaci, koje je bosanski kralj Stjepan Dabiša darovao svojoj kćerci Stani. U pisanim izvorima Ljubuški se prvi put spominje 1444. pod nazivom Lubussa. Zna se da je imao podgrađe i crkvu, vjerovatno na predjelu Crkvina oko današnje crkve Sv. Kate u središtu grada, gdje je pronađena dobro klesana kamena nadgrobna ploča.
Pod osmansku vlast Ljubuški pada vjerovatno 1472. ubrzo nakon pada Počitelja. Osmanlije su učvrstile i proširile tvrđavu, dogradili bedeme s puškarnicama i blizu tvrđave podigli džamiju, čiji je graditelj 1558. bio Nesuh-aga Vučjaković. Ljubuški, koji je u osmansko doba imao status kale (tvrđave), pripadao je Imotskom kadiluku do 1718., a nakon toga sam postaje sjedištem kadije. U to doba često ga napadaju hajduci iz Primorja i Dalmatinske zagore. Znamenit čovjek iz XVIII vijeka svakako je fra Lovro Šitović, pisac gramatike i pismarice, inače porijeklom Ljubušak islamske vjeroispovjesti. U XIX vijeku za Ali-age Rizvanbegovića u Veljačkom polju uzgaja se riža i sade se masline.
Nakon Berlinskoga kongresa 1878. austro-ugarska vojska pod vodstvom generala Jovanovića ušla je 2. august 1878. u Ljubuški. Tokom austro-ugarske uprave Ljubuški doživljava značajan privredni razvoj. Udareni su temelji vinarstvu i uzgoju duhana, izvršena je melioracija Ljubuškoga polja, sagrađene su ceste, mostovi, ustrojio se katastar i podigle se upravne zgrade, crkve i samostan. Osnivaju se i kulturna društva, među nima i hrvatsko kulturno društvo "Napredak". Godine 1906. zabilježen je i štrajk u Duhanskoj stanici, kada su radnici tražili veće nadnice.
U razdoblju Kraljevine SHS, mnogi Ljubušaci su se iselili u prekookeanske zemlje. Na političkom polju intenzivira se rad Hrvatske seljačke stranke. U aprilu 1941, po ustrojstvu NDH Ljubuški je kao kotar pripao velikoj župi Hum. U samom Drugom svjetskom ratu u Ljubuškom nije bilo većih žrtava. Međutim, početkom 1945. i nakon kraja Drugog svjetskoga rata stradao je i jedan dio domobrana i ustaša iz ljubuškoga kraja. Razdoblje 1945. do 1990. vezano je za socijalistički sistem FNRJ i SFRJ. Mnogi Hrvati iz ovog kraja nakon 1960. odlaze na rad u Njemačku, Austriju i druge evropske zemlje. U to se vrijeme podižu tvornice, struja i telefon dolaze do mnogih do tada nerazvijenih naselja, grade se ceste, škole i crkve. Godine 1990 u novembru su održani prvi poslijeratni višestranački izbori u SR Bosni i Hercegovini. U gradu su pobijedile stranke sa hrvatskim nacionalnim predznakom, uglavnom HDZ. U Ljubuškom je po popisu iz 1991. bilo 28.000 Hrvata, 1566 Muslimana i 63 Srba. U aprilu 1992. avioni JNA bombardiraju grad i okolna naselja, što prouzročava ljudske i materijalne žrtve. Tokom 1992. u Ljubuškom je bila glavna komanda HOS-a Hercegovine. U ratnom razdoblju od 1991. do 1995 na vojnim poljima u Bosni i Hercegovini i Hrvatskoj živote je izgubilo i pedeset Ljubušaka. Prvi poginuli borac HVO Ljubuške brigade "Stjepan Radić" bio je Adis Mujanović koji je je poginuo 22. maja 1992. na Krivodolu. Nakon mirovnih pregovora 1994. u Washingtonu i 1995. u Daytonu Ljubuški je u okviru Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine ušao u sastav Zapadnohercegovačkog kantona, zajedno sa Širokim Brijegom, Grudama i Posušjem.
