• Etimologia: Incerta, probablement del romandalusí *putra f., d'un precèltic *pŭtro, del protoindoeuropeu *peh₂w- ‎(«petit»), segle XIV. Cognat del castellà i portuguès potro, gallec poldro. Afí al llatí putus ‎(«noi»), lituà putýtis ‎(«cria d’animal»), sànscrit पुत्र ‎(putrás, «fill»).
