Cerdd Saesneg Canol gyflythrennol a briodolir i William Langland oddeutu 1362 yw Piers Plowman. Traethiad alegorïaidd o hanes Cristnogaeth ydyw, a ysgrifennir o safbwynt y bardd drwy gyfres o freuddwydion gweledigaethol sy'n ymdrin â phynciau cymdeithasol ac ysbrydol yn Lloegr yr Oesoedd Canol.
Tri fersiwn o'r gerdd sydd: testun A, ffurf fer arni sy'n dyddio o'r 1360au; testun B, diwygiad ac estyniad o destun A a gyflawnwyd yn niwedd y 1370au; a thestun C, ffurf ar destun B o'r 1380au sydd yn canolbwyntio ar bynciau athrawiaethol y gerdd yn hytrach na'i nodweddion llenyddol. Mae rhyw hanner cant o lawysgrifau o'r gerdd yn goroesi, gan gynnwys llsgr. NLW 733B a gedwir yn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru.[1]
Cafodd y gwaith hwn gryn ddylanwad ar lenyddiaeth Saesneg Canol a llên Lloegr hyd at gyfnod y Stiwartiaid, yr hyn a elwir traddodiad Piers Plowman. Yn y gerdd hon mae'r sôn cyntaf o Robin Hwd yn llên Lloegr.
Mae union ddigwyddiadau'r gerdd yn amrywio o un testun i'r llall. Gan fod testun B ydy'r hiraf, dyna'r fersiwn a gaiff ei ystyried yn y ffurf "lawnaf" ar Piers Plowman. Traddodir y gerdd o safbwynt Will, sy'n cysgu ar lannau nant ac yn profi gweledigaeth o gae llawn o bobl wrth eu gwaith. Mae'n meddwl tybed sut mae ennill iachawdwriaeth dragwyddol yn y byd hwn. Caiff ei arwain gan bersonoliadau'r Eglwys Sanctaidd, y Cydwybod, a'r Ysgrythur mewn ymgais i ganfod y Gwir. Ar ei daith, mae'n cwrdd â dyn gyrru gwedd o'r enw Piers, a ddyrchefir yn fodel ysbrydol gan Will. Wedi iddo ddeffro am dro, mae'n huno eto ac yn parhau ar ei daith heb gwmni Piers. Er i'r bardd ddathlu gwaredigaeth y ddynolryw drwy farwolaeth ac atgyfodiad yr Iesu, cly'r gerdd gyda gweledigaeth annifyr o gwymp y byd.
Mae gan y Wicidestun Saesneg destun sy'n berthnasol i'r erthygl hon: |
Ysgrifennwyd Piers Plowman yn ystod yr adfywiad cyflythrennol, cyfnod o farddoniaeth gyflythrennol sy'n rhagflaenu oes Chaucer yn llenyddiaeth Saesneg Canol. Y ddwy brif gerdd gyflythrennol arall o'r un cyfnod yw'r rhamantau Arthuraidd Sir Gawain and the Green Knight a Morte Arthure o ddiwedd y 14g.
Mae union genre Piers Plowman yn anodd i'w diffinio. Cerdd ddamhegol ydyw ac enghraifft o lên weledigaethol yr Oesoedd Canol. Mae'r gwaith hefyd yn dychanu llygredigaeth eglwysig yr oes, ac am hynny gellir ei ystyried yn enghraifft o lên gyn-Brotestannaidd.
Oherwydd y diffyg tystiolaeth am yr un a gyfansoddodd Piers Plowman, ymdrechasent ysgolheigion lunio, neu ddychmygu, bywgraffiad tybiedig o'r awdur ar sail nodweddion a manylion ei farddoniaeth. Os cymerir yn ganiataol taw atgof neu waith lled-hunangofiannol ydy'r gerdd, fel y gwnaethant sawl beirniad ac hanesydd llenyddol yn y 19g a dechrau'r 20g, clerigwr o'r urddau lleiaf, yn briod i ferch o'r enw Kit, yn hanu o Orllewin Canolbarth Lloegr ac yn byw yn Llundain oedd William Langland.
Egyr Piers Plowman gyda'r bardd yn crwydro Bryniau Malvern, ac oherwydd hynny credir iddo hanu o'r ardal ger y Mers, o bosib Ledbury neu Colwall yn Swydd Henffordd, Cleobury Mortimer yn Swydd Amwythig, neu Malvern yn Swydd Gaerwrangon. Mae ambell ysgolhaig wedi sylwi ar debygrwydd rhwng cerfiadau ar seddau côr ym Mhriordy Sant Giles, Little Malvern, a delweddaeth y gerdd.
Dengys y gerdd wybodaeth sylweddol o hanes y ffydd Gristnogol, y ffurfwasanaeth, yr Ysgrythur Lân, ac esboniadaeth Feiblaidd draddodiadol, yn ogystal â chrap ar egwyddorion diwinyddol sylfaenol yr Eglwys. Am hynny, awgrymir iddo weithio mewn swydd eglwysig, ac o bosib wedi derbyn ei addysg yn ysgol y Benedictiaid yn Great Malvern.[2] Ceir cyfeiriadau at nifer o leoedd yn Llundain hefyd – gan gynnwys Cornhill, Cock Lane, Cheap, a Court of the Arches – sy'n awgrymu iddo dreulio digon o'i oes yn y ddinas honno.
Cafodd fersiynau gwahanol o Piers Plowman eu copïo, eu darllen, a'u dehongli hyd at ddiwedd yr 16g. Erbyn hynny, cafodd ei cofleidio gan ddiwygwyr Protestannaidd yn Lloegr fel testun oedd yn adlewyrchu eu daliadau hwy ac yn mynegi anfodlonrwydd y werin â'r Eglwys Gatholig. Yn yr 17eg, diflannodd y gerdd o'r cof cyffredin. Yn niwedd y 19g, ail-ddarganfuwyd y gerdd gan feirniaid ac ysgolheigion, ac enillodd ei lle yn yng nghanon llenyddol Lloegr.
