Die Legoland Discovery Centres sind eine Indoor-Attraktion für Kinder im Alter von 3 bis 11 Jahren bzw. Legofans jeden Alters. Dieses Freizeit- und Erlebnis-Zentrum ist eine Art Miniversion des Legolands[1] und gehört zur Midway-Sparte der Merlin Entertainments Group, die auch Attraktionen wie Madame Tussauds, die Sea Life Aquarien und den Hamburg Dungeon, The Amsterdam Dungeon und London Dungeon verwaltet.[2]
Zu den typischen Einrichtungen eines Legoland Discovery Centres gehören eine Lego-Fabrik, in der die Besucher erfahren, wie Legosteine hergestellt werden, ein 4-D-Kino, Lego-Studios, ein Miniland mit Legomodellen von nationalen und internationalen Sehenswürdigkeiten, kleine Fahrgeschäfte, ein Café und Shop und natürlich viele Bau- und Spielmöglichkeiten mit einem Bau-und-Test-Center, Modellbau-Workshop und einem Klettergerüst.[3]
In einigen Zentren findet man neben Bauwerken und Tieren aus Legosteinen außerdem Statuen aus Lego von Kultfiguren wie Spider Man, Darth Vader, Harry Potter und Batman.
Das erste Legoland Discovery Centre wurde 2007 im Sony Center am Potsdamer Platz in Berlin eröffnet. Ein weiteres befindet sich seit 2013 am Centro Oberhausen. Das 2008 im Duisburger Werhahnmühlenkomplex eröffnete Centre[4] wurde 2012 zugunsten des Standorts in Oberhausen geschlossen.[5]
Im Mai 2021 wurde bestätigt, dass ein weiteres Centre in der Hamburger HafenCity entstehen soll. Die Eröffnung ist für Herbst 2023 geplant.[6]
