- July 11: Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, the notorious Mexican drug lord and leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, escaped from the maximum-security Altiplano Federal Prison in Almoloya de Juárez. This was his second escape from a Mexican prison, his first being in 2001.[10]
