The council was under Conservative majority control prior to the election. Following the results, the Conservatives lost control of the council to Labour for the first time in 20 years.[2] The Labour group leader, Mick Fitzpatrick, was appointed leader of the council at the subsequent annual council meeting on 26 May 2023.[3]
