The institute was founded 1964.[17] During this period, the institute's transformation from a regional engineering college to a national university was backed by G.D. Birla, a business magnate in Pilani. Since then, the university has expanded its campuses to Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai.[18] After expansion to a campus in Dubai, it became the first international Indian university. Backed by the Aditya Birla Group, the institute secures extramural research funds from local and national industries and various government agencies.[19][20]
Admissions to on-campus programs are solely contingent on students' performance in pertinent admission tests. The university is known for its remonstrance against reservation, in favour of the meritocratic ideal.[21][22] Through its highly successful and widespread global alumni network spanning varied fields, BITS Pilani has a significant impact on the world's leading centres of academia, research, entrepreneurship, arts and social activism.[23][24]
