English: On September 27, 1956, Captain Milburn G. "Mel" Apt piloted the Bell X-2 research aircraft and set a speed record of 2,094 mph (3,370 km/h), the first human to fly faster than Mach 3. After setting the record, he lost control of the aircraft and crashed in the desert near Edwards Air Force Base. |
