The name Malakas (Tagalog: [mɐlɐˈkas], mah-lə-KAHS) has been used for four tropical cyclones in the western north Pacific Ocean. The name was contributed by the Philippines and is a Filipino word meaning 'strong' or 'powerful'.
- Tropical Storm Malakas (2004) (T0414, 17W) – drifted out to sea
- Typhoon Malakas (2010) (T1012, 13W) – strong Category 2 typhoon that stayed out to sea
- Typhoon Malakas (2016) (T1616, 18W, Gener) – powerful Category 4 typhoon that impacted Taiwan and Japan; one person died
- Typhoon Malakas (2022) (T2201, 02W, Basyang) – extremely large early-season Category 3-equivalent typhoon that remained out to sea
Due to its pronunciation being identical to that of a profane Greek slang word, UKMET requested that the name Malakas will be retired and announced that it would no longer be used.[1] In 2024, it was first announced that the name was replaced by Amuyao (a mountain in Mountain Province).[2] Despite the subsequent replacement of Aghon in the 2024 season, the name will officially be used in the Philippine local naming system by 2028. In 2025, the name was also replaced by Amuyag, which is a Cordilleran word for "to scatter" or "to spread out".
