A student at the Conservatoire national d'art dramatique in Paris, René Dupuy was later theater manager of:
- the Théâtre Gramont from 1954 to 1973,
- the Théâtre de l'Athénée from 1966 to 1972,
- the Théâtre Fontaine from 1972 to 1985.
He was professor of dramatic art at the école de la Rue Blanche [fr].
