The Padres improved on their previous season record of 83–78, and were in contention for the National League West title until the final week of the regular season. However, a 2-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on September 27 ended their postseason hopes. The Padres finished in second place at 89–73, three games behind the San Francisco Giants.
