The 1991–92 NBA season was the 16th season for the Indiana Pacers in the National Basketball Association, and their 25th season as a franchise.[1] The Pacers received the thirteenth overall pick in the 1991 NBA draft, and selected power forward Dale Davis out of Clemson University.[2][3][4][5]
The Pacers struggled early into the season losing 9 of their first 13 games. After ten games, the team released Mike Sanders to free agency; Sanders would later on re-sign with his former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.[6][7] The Pacers continued to struggle with a 15–28 record near the end of January, and held a 19–29 record at the All-Star break.[8] However, the team won 25 of their final 39 games, finishing in fourth place in the Central Division with a mediocre 40–42 record, and earning the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference.[9]
Reggie Miller averaged 20.7 points, 3.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game, while Chuck Person averaged 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game, and sixth man Detlef Schrempf provided the team with 17.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game off the bench, and was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year for the second consecutive year.[10][11][12][13] In addition, Michael Williams contributed 15.0 points, 8.2 assists and 2.9 steals per game, and was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team, while Rik Smits provided with 13.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. Off the bench, Vern Fleming averaged 8.9 points and 3.2 assists per game, while George McCloud contributed 6.6 points per game, but only played 51 games due to a thumb injury,[14][15] Davis averaged 6.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game, and LaSalle Thompson provided with 4.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.[16]
In the Eastern Conference First Round of the 1992 NBA playoffs, the Pacers faced off against the Boston Celtics for the second consecutive year, where they were swept in three straight games.[17][18][19] Following the season, Person and Williams were both traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.[20][21][22]
