Hasan Mohammad Khan (born 1948), also known as Hasan Mohammad Khan Warsi, is an Indian politician from Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh. He was a founding member of the Janata Dal (JD) and a notable figure in eastern Uttar Pradesh’s political landscape during the 1970s–1990s.

Early life and family

Hasan Mohammad Khan is born in 1948 in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, into a family known for its contributions to India’s political and independence movements. His father, Ahmad Hasan Khan, was a prominent politician and among the youngest freedom fighters from the region. During India’s independence struggle, particularly around 1936, he was imprisoned several times for participating in anti-colonial activities.

Khan completed his schooling at M.H. Inter College, Ghazipur, and later earned his LL.B. and M.Phil. degrees from the University of Allahabad. He is married and has three daughters.

Political career

Khan entered active politics during the Emergency (1975–1977), joining democratic resistance efforts alongside leaders such as Mulayam Singh Yadav and Kesri Singh. He was detained for his involvement in anti-Emergency movements and later became one of the founding members of the Janata Dal.

In the 1991 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, Khan contested from the Ghazipur Assembly constituency as a Janata Dal candidate. He secured 26,808 votes, won over Udai Pratap Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who received 23,280 votes. His campaign reflected his reputation as a principled and grassroot-oriented leader in the region.

Public service and community involvement

Beyond politics, Khan has played an important role in social and spiritual institutions. He serves as the Honourable Secretary of the Astana-e-Aliya Dargah Warsi Association at Dewa Sharif, Barabanki district, one of northern India’s most prominent Sufi shrines. Under his stewardship, the Dargah engaged in community welfare, educational, and interfaith harmony initiatives.

Later years

Since 2019, Hasan Mohammad Khan has been partially inactive in public life due to a severe brain stroke. Despite this, he remains respected in both Ghazipur and Dewa Sharif for his humility, integrity, and decades of service to political and social causes.
