(1) (S)-2-haloacid + H₂O ${\displaystyle \rightleftharpoons }$ (R)-2-hydroxyacid + halide

(2) (R)-2-haloacid + H₂O ${\displaystyle \rightleftharpoons }$ (S)-2-hydroxyacid + halide
