In the history of Japan, it marks the final year of Heisei period, Heisei 31 (平成31年 Heisei sanjūichinen), after the abdication of Emperor Akihito on April 30, and the beginning of the Reiwa period, Reiwa 1 (令和元年 Reiwa gannen, gannen means "first year"), from May 1 under the reign of his eldest son, current Japanese emperor Naruhito. Thus, 2019 corresponds to the transition between Heisei and Reiwa in the Japanese calendar.
