Background
Daniel Andrews was first elected as leader of the Victorian Labor Party following the party's defeat at the 2010 Victorian state election. He had served as a minister for predecessors Steve Bracks and John Brumby in the Gaming, Consumer Affairs and Health portfolios. Andrews led Labor back to government at the 2014 Victorian state election defeating the then one-term coalition government. During his time as Premier, Andrews has overseen a range of policy initiatives and reforms. Notable among these is the level crossing removal program and Metro Tunnel. He subsequently led the party to a second term following a landslide victory at the 2018 Victorian state election and continued on with projects such as the Suburban Rail Loop and the controversial West Gate Tunnel. Andrews oversaw the handling of natural disasters, such as the 2019–20 Australian bushfire season and COVID-19 pandemic in Victoria during this tenure and implemented stringent measures to protect public health and safety, earning both praise and criticism. The party was reelected to a third term at the 2022 Victorian state election.
