Background
Fatal accidents on Bolivian roads are frequent. Transportation in the country kills 1,400 people per year on average. In January, a similar roadway excursion involving a bus left 19 dead.[1]
Crash
The bus was driving on mountainous route with many twists and turns in the Yocalla Municipality, Potosí Department, Bolivia on February 17, 2025.[2] Officials said the vehicle plunged almost 800 metres (2,600 ft) into a ravine possibly due to high speed, after the driver lost control. Spokesman for the Potosí Police Command Limber Choque confirmed that the bus, owned by the San José transport company, covered the Potosí–Oruro route and indicated that the accident occurred on a mountain road full of curves.[3]
The crash killed 31 people. The dozens of injured people included ten adults and four children who were hospitalized, several with severe injuries and in intensive care.[2]
