History
Past football clubs in Newbiggin, Newbiggin Colliery Welfare[2][3] and Newbiggin Central Welfare[4] date back to 1911,[5][6] with Central Welfare having folded in the mid-2000s.[1][7] AFC Newbiggin were founded in 2010 to fill the gap following Central Welfare's collapse,[7] and joined the North Northumberland League and then the second division of the Northern Alliance in 2013.[8] They won promotion to the Premier Division in two seasons, but briefly returned to the North Northumberland League in 2018, before resuming their journey in division two of the Northern Alliance again in 2019, returning to the Premier in 2022.
After seeking to develop a new ground elsewhere in 2020,[9] Newbiggin were able to expand the facilities at Newbiggin Sport Centre in 2023,[5] creating the possibility of playing at a higher level. In 2025, they were duly able to gain promotion to the Northern League after finishing second in the Northern Alliance.[10]
