Airbyte is an open-source data integration platform that enables organizations to collect and synchronize data from a variety of sources into destinations such as data warehouses, data lakes, or databases. Airbyte was founded in January 2020 in San Francisco, California, by Michel Tricot and John Lafleur.[3]
In March 2021, Airbyte raised a $5.2 million seed funding round led by Accel.[4]
In May 2021, the company announced a $26 million Series A round led by Benchmark, with participation from 8VC, Accel, SV Angel, and Y Combinator. By this point, the platform offered 70 certified connectors and had approximately 1,200 community members.[5]
In December 2021, Airbyte raised $150 million in a Series B round co-led by Altimeter Capital and Coatue Management, achieving a valuation of $1.5 billion and unicorn status.[6][7]
In April 2022, Airbyte acquired Grouparoo, an open-source reverse ETL startup, and launched Airbyte Cloud, a fully managed, hosted version of the data integration platform.[8]
In September 2024, the company released Airbyte 1.0, which introduced AI-powered connector generation, GraphQL support, and Self-Managed Enterprise capabilities. By this time, Airbyte reported having 7,000 enterprise customers and more than 170,000 platform deployments.[9]
In February 2025, the company became the first open-source data movement platform the shift from volume-based to capacity-based pricing.[10]
In September 2025, Airbyte launched version 2.0, which introduced Enterprise Flex, allowing hybrid deployments, and Data Activation, which lets users push insights from their destinations into business tools.[1][11]

Adoption
As of 2025, Airbyte's open-source community has grown to over 25,000 members, serving more than 7,000 paying customers.[12][13]
