Akita Station (秋田駅, Akita-eki) is a junction railway station in the city of Akita, Akita Prefecture, Japan, operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East).

Lines

Akita Station is the northern terminus of the Akita Shinkansen, and is 127.3 kilometers from Morioka and 662.6 kilometers from Tokyo. The station is also the northern terminus of the Uetsu Main Line and is 298.7 kilometers from the starting point of that line at Niitsu and is also a station on Ōu Main Line. Most trains on the Oga Line continue past the nominal southern terminal of that line at Oiwake to terminate at Akita Station.

The station is an elevated station, consisting of four island platforms serving eight tracks for regular trains, and two bay platforms for the Akita Shinkansen. The station has a "Midori no Madoguchi" staffed ticket office and a View Plaza travel agency.[1]

History

Akita Station opened on 21 October 1902.[2] The station was absorbed into the JR East network upon the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. The station's building was renovated in 1997.
