Al-Kabir Polytechnic, also known as Al Kabir Institute of Management and Technology, is a private technical university in Jamshedpur, India. Established in 1990 by Abdul Hakim, It is one of the oldest private polytechnic institutes in eastern India. The college is managed by Kabir Welfare Trust, based in Jamshedpur. Al-Kabir Polytechnic has emerged as one of the leading technical institutions, attracting students from neighboring states such as Bihar and West Bengal.[1]

The college offers diploma program and bachelors degree in engineering, computer science and business management. Until 2000, it was affiliated to the Bihar State Technical Board in Patna and later went under the jurisdiction of Jharkhand University of Technology, Ranchi. Al-Kabir Polytechnic is recognized by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The college is known for campus and off campus placement and has record of successful alumnus, specially in Gulf countries. It has collaboration with numerous multinational companies in areas of training, apprenticeship and placement. The college has over 100 academic staffs and approximately 2,200 students.

Al Kabir Polytechnic is a part of the Kabir Welfare Trust (KWT).[2] The trust is a society founded by Abdul Hakim under society registration act 1860.[2] Hakim was zealous in philanthropic roles in Jamshedpur.[2] He is credited for establishing various other institutions, such as Kabiria Middle and High Schools, Kabiria Inter College, Kabiria Urdu Middle School, Kabir Memorial Urdu High School, Kabiria Women’s College and Girls Degree College.[2] Al-Kabir Polytechnic was established in the year of 1990 with the financial aid of Islamic Development Bank, based in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.[2] It was one of the first private polytechnic in eastern India.[2]
Diploma courses were began at current campus in 1993.[2] The first batch of the college was recognized by the All India Council of Technical Education in 1994.[2] The batch consisted of 60 students in mechanical engineering, 30 students in electrical engineering and 60 students in electronics engineering, with 150 intake.[2] In 1997, the college increased seats in electrical engineering to 60.[2] The college introduced diploma programs in Computer and Automobile engineering, with increase of intake in Mechanical engineering and electrical engineering to 60.[2]
The college was affiliated to the then State Board of Technical Education Bihar.[2] On 15 November 2000, the polytechnic's affiliation went to the Jharkhand University of Technology, Ranchi after formation of Jharkhand.[3] With increasing opportunities in automobile engineering, a lab was introduced for automobile engineering in 2000.[3] In 2002, the college saw an increase in intake of in electronics and computer science department.[3] The college introduced civil engineering in 2008, becoming the second private college in Jamshedpur to do so.[3]
Expansion
In 2024–25, the college began offering degree courses like Bachelor of Business administration and Bachelors of computer application.[4] In June 2025, the college received official approval to offer Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) courses.[4] The college was granted permission by the All India Council of Technical Education, based in New Delhi.[4] Under this permission, the college has been permitted to offer B.Tech courses from the 2025–2028 batches.[4]

The campus of Al-Kabir Polytechnic is located on 15th Number Road in Mango (lit. Maango), which is the largest satellite township of Jamshedpur. It is easily accessible from Old Purulia Road. The urban campus of the college is spread over an area of 8–10 acres (32,000–40,000 m2). It include dedicated academic blocks, laboratories, workshops, and administrative offices. Well equipped laboratories and classrooms played an important giving reputation to the college. Specific labs are designated for the Department of Computer Science. For computer science and engineering, there is a smart room enabling the features and concepts of idea of an IT infrastructure.
It features an architecture that blends modern style with Indo–Islamic elements and overall, the campus is painted in green color. The campus include a large central playground dedicated to both student sporting activities and hosting events, which contributes significantly to the overall campus area. Academic facilities are equipped with a high-speed Wi-Fi network, which is also available for the laboratories. Adjacent to the campus and under the college is a mosque, named Masjid-e-Umar. The college has a well-furnished and air-conditioned conference room, which has a projector and internet facility.[5] Many singular events are organized inside the conference room.[5]
There are two distinct and separate hostels, each divided into four blocks.[6] The hostels have accommodation for one hundred and fifty students each and provides accommodation during the operative academic session.[6] Special attention is given to First year students and they are housed separately.[6] An ‘Anti-Ragging Committee’ and a ‘Mentor cell’ is designated for care of the campus and making the campus ‘Ragging Free’.[6] Telephone numbers of Principal, Warden, Asst. Warden, HOD’s, & other important staff are provided to each & every student of first year. [6]
Al Kabir Polytechnic has a canteen facility inside the campus.[7] The canteen was inaugurated in 2003.[7] It is part and parcel for the students in the campus.[7] The canteen offers snacks, tea and beverages to students as well as staff members at a subsidized rate.[7] Situated behind the campus, the canteen has a large floor area.[7] It is privately run and well managed canteen, with recognition from Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).[7]

Admission
The eligibility required for admission for Diploma in this college is 10th pass from any of the recognized board with minimum of 35% or passing marks and must have passed in the entrance exam — Jharkhand Combined Entrance Examination Board. For lateral entry in Diploma's 2nd year, the candidate must have passed the 12th examination from any recognized board with science stream. Or else have done a one-year technical course or I. T. I in a trade in order to qualify for getting enrolment in that particular branch. The admission students can also be done on based on management quota.
