An-Najjariyah

An-Najjariyah (Arabic: النجارية) is a municipality in the Sidon District in the governorate of South Lebanon. The Zahrani River passes through the north of the Municipality. The Southern Municipality contains two mosques that each follow a different Islamic Madhab (مذهب), which are Sunnism and Shiism. Though, The Shiite mosque is considered the main mosque of the municipality.^[1] An-Najjariyah is Located in the Zahrani region in the sidon district, The South Governorate. The village administers three hamlets: Msayleh, Kherbet Basal and Al-Zahrani.

History

In 1875, in the late Ottoman era, Victor Guérin described it: "Nedjarieh [...] is a fairly considerable farm, worked by Maronites and "schismatic Greeks", and which has replaced an ancient agricultural establishment, as is proved by cisterns and presses hewn in the rock. Fig, olive and mulberry trees surround it."^[2]

Demographics

In 2014, Muslims made up 95.61% of registered voters in An-Najjariyah. 63.06% of the voters were Shiite Muslims and 32.56% were Sunni Muslims.^[3]
